David & Chris

Two Song writers team up interview 24th Jan 2011
On Friday last I had the privilege of speaking with two local singer songwriters and in our conversation we discussed music, politics and much more. However as this is a musical article I will concentrate on the music for now and let’s leave the politics till another day. The two Singer songwriters are Dave Murphy from Youghal and Kyata Known as Chris Yewell now living in Youghal but originally from America,

I asked when they started writing, Dave answered he had been writing since he was a young boy. Kyata has been writing songs for a long time now. This partnerships different in that these lads write separately but produce the finished songs together.
"It allows us keep our own style and originality and with another person listening in we can get ideas on adding to the songs." Dave had written a song and everyone who heard it thought it was a great song but because of this unique partnership Kyata made some points about the song which looking back on Dave tried these new ideas out and he found it strengthened the song no end. Kyata remarked that the same applies to himself.
I asked Dave did he write poetry or stories or was it just songwriting, ” I have tried poetry and even got 3 pages into a play before I decided that songwriting was my thing so I stuck to that. Kyata on the other hand decided that he wouldn’t allow himself go near music for 30 years as he was concentrating on other mediums mostly painting, when he decided that it was time he took his lessons from painting and creating to carry though in his songwriting.
The more I talked to these two guys the more I noticed that formal barriers and rules about songwriting were being turned  upside down and inside out, these guys were leaving no stone unturned in finding a formula that works for them. This would not work for many other musicians unless you have a strong sense of yourself and your own music and the ability to share and stretch yourself to trying new things. But for these guys it’s the start of something new and different.
These two guys have amassed years of experience and ability between them with Kyata writing performing his songs as a busker in Cork and Dave writing and performing in venues down through the years. Its great to see local musicians taking it on themselves to get together and avail of support from another songwriter, Each is unique but coming together they both bring something new and different to the music,
Dave and Kyata have released their first single ‘Free Mexico’ which can be heard on line at http://www.reverbnation.com/kyata this is a song which despite its length is one of the best songs this unique partnership has come up with, only time will tell but between them there are over 300 songs sitting on a shelf waiting to be picked up recorded and released to a waiting world. Thre written word does not do these guys justiceyou have to be in the same room as them to understand and feel the energy the music and the soul that they carry. If you get a chance see them live.
