Michael Del Punto

Michael Del Punto interview 20th Dec 2010
Over the last few months young singer Michael Del Punta has become noticed for many things his ability to entertain and serve food at the same time. However it’s his musical talents that have started to come to the fore. He started life singing while working as a waiter in Capri Bay restaurant in Youghal in County Cork and has progressed to more of a full time singer then waiter.

We have interviewed Michael before but it was great to catch up with him again this week on Local Radio where he was talking about his latest album Christmas Collection. The one thing that strikes you about Michael is despite his youth his singing ability if from a person senior in years. You might expect him to be singing songs by the latest pop groups to come on the scene however while this does interest him its his uncanny ability to sing the standards of yester year from Frank Sinatra, Tony Benet, To a more contemporary Michael Buble. His aim is to one day be better then Michael Buble and this dream is on course for completion.
The songs from this album were put together in Claycastle Studio in Youghal under the watchful eye of John Burke and Warren Tivy. For this album Michael decided to bring in some live musicians to give it a better feel and he chose pianist Dominic Finn who has under his credits is the Musical Director for Cobh Cathedral as well as a much sought after arranger and producer among other things. He also has well known and respected Double bass player Pat Barret. Local drummer Ollie Loughnan on drums and Roy Kelleher from Cork on trumpet again one of the most sought after musicians in Cork today. To top it off he brought Jenny Stack on board to help with backing vocals and harmonies another fine singer in her own right. Completing the line up is Warren Tivy on keyboards.
With a song list starting with New York at Christmas, The Christmas Song, Let it Snow, Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle, Silver Bells White Christmas, Santa Claus is coming to Town, and that’s all its no wonder it is in such demand at this time of year in the locality. Michael has been singing and performing locally outside the restaurant and is in much demand now that people have heard him sing. Its busy for me at this moment in time, I seem to spend more and more time singing then ever before. It’s a direction that I like taking and am looking forward to the journey. I have been getting great help from everyone and I hope that it pays off.
Michael is getting himself sorted and is looking at putting a new management team in place before the end of the year. He says that he will take his time in the studio and get his next album out before the summer and that he will push it further this time make it better and work harder on it. Every time I sing, record, work with another musician, singer I am learning something new, I am improving all the time, let it be known that this young man is someone you will hear lots more about in the future.
