Palko

Palko interview 13th Sept 2010.
Following on from the successful release of their debut album Dreamers earlier this year, The band Palko from Cork have released their first single “Take me down” from the album. Formed just over two years ago Palko have since been perfecting their live performance playing in venues throughout Cork City and County.
Having already headlined in Cyprus Avenue and played in The Pavilion and An Bróg in Cork an appearance at Cork’s Independence Music Festival they have previously played alongside R.S.A.G and were finalists in Cork’s Red FM Transmission Battle of the Bands and U.C.C and C.I.T’s Battle of the Bands competitions. More recently Palko played support for My Evil Ex in The Pavilion, Cork receiving a rapturous reception on the night.

The band are made up of Youghal man Terry O Brien on guitar & lead vocals, Barry Quealy from Ballincollig in Cork on Bass, Keyboards & Vocals, Brian Leach from Douglas in Cork on Guitar, Keyboards & Vocals and Mark Flavin from Inch on drums and vocals. The band base their sound on two guitars bass and drums the traditional rock band sound but they try to mix it up a bit and cover as many styles as possible. As Terry says himself when anyone sees us they think were a lot heavier musically then we are, they tend to think were a metal band what with the beard and long hair etc. With a hint of humor he adds, we have not reached the twelve min guitar solo epic stage yet but were working on it, some of the music is a bit heavy all right but not all of it. We are influenced by the likes of Queen, Zeppelin and Pink Floyd if you listen to their music you notice that each track has a different sound and we are the same, the different taste and style we listen to influences us in some way or other.

The album DREAMERS is now available from HMV, Cork, BMP Records, Waterford and the single is available to download from iTunes. It’s about 40 minutes long and is good value for money. Most of the songs are written by the group with Terry being the main writer but each member of the group has huge input into each song. The lads have spent so much time in the studio that they work well together with each of them taking turns at the mixing desk. Another local man involved in the single is Alan Hurley comedian and filmmaker from Youghal who shot the lads video for the single which can be seen on Youtube. You can check out the band on their own website www.palkotheband.com or see them live locally.
