Ugly Beautiful

Ugly Beautiful interview 25th oct 2010
Ugly Beautiful from Cork have been on the go since 2007. They have just released their debut single 100-1 to critical acclaim. Their debut album Paradise has been well received since its release – Cormac Battle of 2fm describes the opening track Weekend as “Brilliant!”. This album soars at high volumes and demands multiple listens – drawing you into layers of texture and sound. It has received both local and national airplay as well as television airplay. The diversity of heavy and ambient sounds comes from a broad range of influences, from Sigur Ros to the Queens of the Stone Age.
This week lead singer and guitar player Kieran Lane took time out to chat with me. When Kieran was asked where did they come up with the name he says that it was based on the bands mantra from the ugly harsh sounds of hard driving biting guitar to the beautiful melodies and lyrics they combine.
Ugly Beautiful are a three piece alternative rock band who offer something different. They can be described as my bloody valentine meets smashing pumpkins, has a drink with Jeff Buckley on a bad day. The band is made up of Kieran Lane from Bishopstown on guitar and Vocals Mick Gallagher from Cobh on Bass and Colin Kirwan from Carrigaline on Drums.  Kieran and Colin were friends from school who met up again recently when the bands original drummer had to leave the band. Colin was drafted in alongside Mick to create the new sound this band offer. Kieran has been writing most of the songs for the band and he has been writing with a long time. The band shares a mutual drive to create, explore and develop a new sound. Their music is filled with contrasts, driving rhythms and sweeping melodies pitted against raw edgy sounds.
All songs on the forthcoming album were produced, recorded & mixed by Ugly Beautiful and Ross O’Donovan at Data Recording Studios in Kerry where the band spent several days working on the different tracks. At a recent gig in The Crane Lane in Cork the band were surprised by the turnout and the amount of people who came along on the night to see them in action. Kieran said that he was truly surprised by the turnout because they didn’t expect such a large crowed, for some reason our videos online and the radio plays we have been getting seem to reach a wider audience that we didn’t expect or think about. That coupled with the great review in Hot Press magazine certainly seems to lend itself to a band that is going places.
