Gavin Moore interview 20th Sept 2010.
Born into what is arguably Ireland’s most famous music family, Gavin Moore, who spoke with Shane Supple this week on Youghal radio, respects the influences of his uncles Christy Moore and Luka Bloom, but musically, this singer songwriter is most definitely his own man. Gavin started playing guitar when he was 16 and in turn started singing at the same time accompanying himself as he learned new songs. Like most people he then progressed to writing his own songs, and then some years ago he attended Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa in Cork where he further honed his songwriting skills.
After he finished his course he decided to take the bold step and become a full time musician.
For the last 8 years Gavin either on his own or with a band, from in Clonakilty in County Cork has perfected his craft on the UK, US, European, Australian and Scandinavian Folk Circuits performing hundreds of headline shows and at festivals spanning from Dundee Scotland to Dundee Australia.
When asked what advice would he give to young musicians starting out he replied,” the hardest thing to do is find your own voice in a way, in terms of our own musicianship or songwriting your own style, because we all have influences and sometimes we get bogged down by our influences and it can take time to discover who you are as a musician. It’s like anything, it takes time to discover who you are and not to get caught up on trends or what other people are into, everyone you hear influences you to some degree, but the ones I’ve listened to the most would probably be Neil Young, Tom Waits, Roy Harper, John Spillane and Don Mescall said Gavin find what makes you unique and be yourself and practice, practice and more practice. Gavin continued saying he had recently bought a new mandolin and ukulele to add to his collection of guitars and is going to spend time practicing and learning how to play them.
Gavin recently brought out a new album ‘Tonnta’, which according to his press release is forged in the magical countryside of West Cork, is a beautiful atmospheric combination of folk rock and traditional Irish influence, which makes assured steps into musical territory as yet uncharted, surfing the crest of a secret wave somewhere between Jack Johnson and Iarla Ó Lionáird. Having heard the album one cannot really argue with the wording of the press release. As the song says ’nothing lasts forever’ but ‘Tonnta’ will, as it will be synonymous with West Cork and the point at which Gavin Moore creates his own musical dynasty for the future. You can catch Gavin playing in a venue in East Cork sometime soon or check out his website online at www.gavinmoore.com
