Hell For leather

Hell For leather interview 8th Nov 2010
If your wondering who “Hell for leather” are? They are Michael Carey 28 on guitar and vocals from Ladysbridge, Jer O Leary 24 on Mandolin from Ladysbridge and Ken Landers 30 on drums from Carrightwohill. Each of the lads sings, or as they say them selves, we shout along in the background to what ever song is being played. On first impression this bunch of lads are a little wild if not bordering on insane, but its all in good spirits.
It all started with the song “Seamus just wants to be Famous” on youtube.
While Michael was in Brisbane, Australia he was outside a pub one day taking a break and someone asked him to sing a song. He duly obliged and it was filmed by one of the watching crowd. It went online and when Red Fm started talking about it, it started getting thousands of hits. As Michael says “The mother is wore out from clicking on You tube So I asked Michael how it started out. He said while he was in Australia it was a hobby but he kept writing songs when he came home he met Jer outside the bank and they decided to put a group together. Jer knew Ken and the three lads started playing and rehearsing. The next step was to record a few tracks and make a CD, so they headed into Claycastle Studio in Youghal with Warren Tivy and John Burke.
As Jer says it was easy to pick the songs we wanted to record. We all love the old Irish songs, and after playing a few gigs we noticed that the crowd loved certain songs so we just kept the list short. When I asked the lads what they called the album, the answer just about sums up the attitude of good fun, the album’s called “Lamping Rabbits” as you can see, said Michael from the title we don’t take things too seriously.
Songs on the album include The Mountain Dew, the Ferryman & Highland Paddy, Finnegan’s Wake, Johnson’s motor car, Songs from a folk background but in their own inimitable style. A trad band with a sense of humor. Ken the, quite one of the three says its great fun to be able to play songs you like and have fun doing so.
When I asked Michael where could we get copies of the CD his reply “You come up to my house, Mam will be inside there and the father will be outside cutting the grass. Just tap on the glass and she’ll come out”. This was followed by a burst of laughter from all three members before they burst into song again. It was then I realised it was pointless to ask serious questions. Keep an eye out for this band in the local area or check them out on facebook.
