Tomas Dubghail interview 6th Dec 2010On Friday last I interviewed Tomas Dubghaill about the release of his new single “Where did Christmas Go”. Tomas was helped in the studio by two local girls from Inch Aine and Caoimhe O Driscoll from Inch National School who provided backing vocals on this track. When Tomas spoke with school principle Mr. O Mahoney about finding some singers for his single there were many fine singers to pick from in the school but the two girls came out on top.
The Songs for the single were written one morning by Tomas after a good night’s sleep, as he says himself he must have been dreaming about it because it was fresh in his mind and easy to write in the morning. So Tomas took his songs and the two girls to a recording studio in Blarney where his friend David Murphy was able to supply the backing music for the tracks. David had worked with Tomas before on other projects and the two have a great working relationship in the studio.
Every detail of this new single was brought to life under the watchful eye of Tomas even the cover was designed and made by himself and using a photo of Skellig Island and a photo of the two girls he sat down and made it all on his own computer. Now what makes this tale a little extraordinary is that Tomas is not a young wannabe pop star but a rather distinguished musical vocalist who has spent many years singing in different choirs from The Cork School of music Choir, St Finbar Choir and choirs in Manchester and has even appeared on Radio with Gay Byrne and on the Cork Opera House. Tomas says himself as you get little older and time moves on and the years fly by its not easy to get the sound I once was able to achieve but you have to live your life and get on with it. I asked Tomas how old was he and he replied I am 71 years old and enjoying things at the moment including the recording of this single.
There are two tracks on the CD Where did Christmas Go and Christmas Bells, Tomas prefers the first track because it was the one track that had the two girls singing on it and it’s a song about hope and getting on with things. I asked him how the girls in the Studio were and he said they were better then himself totally relaxed and sang great. The song has received lots of play on local radio in Youghal and is available to buy in Youghal Midleton and Mallow.
