Kym Kelly interview Thursday 20th Oct 2011
This week I had the chance to catch up with Kym Kelly from Kildare town. She is well known around the pubs and clubs in Leinster, having played as part of a two piece band with her father for seventeen years. It was only last year that Kym began to look further afield, and started to promote her music on a national and international scale. She has recorded her first album "A new road to travel" and has had a great year winning most popular local artist in the Leinster entertainment awards 2011 Country Singer - Best Breakthrough Artist 2011, Most Popular Local Artist -Leinster Entertainment Awards, Runner up in Country Bulletin Best Newcomer Award.
As she says herself "This year has been the fastest moving year of my life. From recording one song "Every little thing" my life has changed and have met so many wonderful people in this musical family we all share, to shooting a video in my home village of Robertstown, Over the last nine months, Kym strong, agile voice combined with her vibrant, dynamic energy and stage presence have given her profound recognition across Ireland. Her new radio single 'Troubadour' taken from her debut album, should bring continued success to this versatile performer. With Influences from Mary Chapin Carpenter, Philomena Begley, Susan McCann, Gloria, Trisha Yearwood, Patsy Cline, Steve Holy, Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, Johnny Cash and of course Georgette Jones with whom she shared the stage with on Georgettes recent tour of Ireland.
Kym's interpretation of the Carlene Carter favourite, 'Every Little Thing', was released as a single earlier in the year, and struck a chord on many radio stations. The song put across Kym's exuberant, bubbly persona, and this was reflected further in her debut video, which recently aired on the Phil Mack Country Show. Kym also recently appeared at Country Fest in Letterkenny, Co.Donegal, where she launched her debut album,'A New Road To Travel'. The album features old favourites such as 'Blanket On The Ground', 'One Day At A Time' and 'Love Me', as well as original songs including Banbridge singer songwriter Tracey Grant's 'Big Big Noise'.
She also released a second single taken from the album, 'Troubadour'. Since its release, 'Troubadour' has touched many in the music business, telling the story of a country singer when the night comes to an end, and the thoughts, feelings, dreams and sentiments that come with that. It talks about a passion for country music and the drive that keeps artists on the road despite adversity.
