Darragh Lee

Darragh Lee from Youghal Co Cork was my guest this week, Darragh who was involved in the recent Sacred Roots all ages Busking Competition which took place on Saturday August 11th in conjunction with the Tag Rugby Festivities in Youghal Co Cork, where  14 acts took part and despite the rain showers, braved the elements and played some wonderful music for everyone. Bands, Magicians, rappers and singer songwriters partook in the event that boasted a €1500 euro prize fund thank to the Vintners of Youghal. There were four categories Overall winners were Colin Turner & Georgia Theresa from Co. Wexford, Best under 16 winner went to the very talented Daniel Ryan from Youghal, Best Group went to the dance gurus Synergy from Youghal and Co Waterford and Best Individual Performance went to Darragh Lee.

Currently Darragh is on a break for the summer holidays but will see him returning to school shortly to get ready for the Leaving cert. When he finishes school Darragh would hope to carry on studying ecology or zoology for a career in either of those fields. For his spare time Darragh likes taking care of his pet snakes, mice, rats and reptiles and of course his music. He spends his time learning new songs on his guitar and busking around Youghal during the summer.

He is inspired by many great songwriters and musicians, his biggest influence is Irish songwriter Mick Flannery and it was after seeing him play in Youghal last year he inspired Darragh to get more involved in his music. “I just like the way he writes his songs and puts them together”. He spends a lot of time learning new songs and getting the sound as close as he can to suit his guitar playing and vocal range.  He is also a regular member at the Youth Café in Youghal where he can join in making music with others his own age, Its great to be able to go to the Youth Café and fall in with the others, it allows us to busk away and come up with good ideas for songs and play along with a full band, just busking along.

Darragh who likes busking says that its great to see many songs from modern artists requested by passer’s by, songs from Hey Soul sister by train, No Woman no cry from Bob Marley, Where every ou will go by The Calling, Set fire to the rain by Adel are all songs that turn heads and get a great reaction from the public.  I asked Darragh if had any recordings out and he replied that he was working on stuff and had recorded with other groups in the past at Claycastle Recording studio which was great, but for now he is just concentrating on getting songs ready to record.

Darragh is a very talented guitar player and singer and when his album comes out it will surly fly off the shelves, keep an eye out for Darragh on a street corner near you and in time a concert venue near you.
