I met with local band Dirty Voodoo (and yes thats the way they spell it) and we had a chat and talk about music the local scene and the aspirations of the band. The band consists of David (Dom) Mulcahy who has been playing guitar since he was 16. Dom met Sean in 2004 and through the love of the guitar and the music, they struck up a friendship. Tommy Collins knew Sean while they were in another band and another friendship was formed. The lads had heard of Colin and decided they needed a contemporary soulful singer to compliment their band, so they asked vocalist Colin Lee to join Dirty Voodoo. Colin, Sean. Tommy and David met up for a jam one night, where the final member to join Patrick Rusty Gleeson sat in on drums, Rusty decided to sit in with the lads on drums for a bit of fun and Dirty Voodoo was complete, since then they have never looked back.
This collection of musicians came together by accident and through their love of music and playing, the result is strong and balanced, they all work well together and friendship within the group is solid,. With each member knowing that the other lads are there to do their own parts they can be confident and play with the freedom that the Blues requires.
I asked the lads what were their influences and they replied that it varies from each member of the group. David has been influenced by many artists, Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden. He has always had an interest in music, but primarily rock music, Colin first started singing country at 16, he was influenced by the music that was in his home with his father Peter a well established guitar player and brother Bobby another musician of amazing quality there was no escape, he got into musicals, where he gained versatility and experience singing pop, rock and some jazz.
Bassist Tommy Collins is currently working as a music teacher and has trained in classical piano. He made the move to drums at the age of 15, playing with numerous bands around Waterford and Cork. Sean Cudlip started playing guitar at 13. Having a father who was a blues musician you can see where the early influences started for Sean, not just a guitarist he is also talented songwriter. While dabbling in guitar driven rock and metal with other bands, he was never able to leave the Blues alone for long. As for the final link in this chain Rusty has been playing with a number of years now in different bands and is a self taught drummer but with lots of experience from gigging, he brings a truly professional element to the band.
So when you put this collection of musicians together you come up with Dirty Voodoo. A band that work hard, play hard, rehearse hard, and give it there all you can see why they are making a name for themselves around Munster.
