Colette O Donovan

This week I had the chance to speak with Colette O Donovan from Cobh, who has just finished recording some songs on CD. I asked Colette why she got involved in music and where it all started. She told me she had been singing since she was a child, she always loved opera but in school they were not taught opera so her background was not that type of background, a few years ago she decided to do voice lessons and get herself trained by Frank Buckley in Cork. She spent 3 years under Frank’s guidance at the Cork school of Music where she joined Opera Cork. She spent some time involved with Opera Cork performing at various functions in and around Cork. Then because of family and work  commitments she gave it a break and last year when she had time to herself she decided to get back into singing again.

So her first port of call was John Cronin’s recording studio in Cobh, not knowing if she was doing the right thing at the time or not, she grabbed her music, words and headed into the studio, the recording worked out so well that she decided to do some more recording of some of her favourite songs, one was Summertime and the other was Somewhere Over the rainbow. After some months had passed Colette sang in some local competitions doing quite well, she even traveled to Dublin to sing a song from the musical Grease for some of her friends in a Concert. She then met with Susan from The Vocal Chord Recording studios in Midleton and decided to go back into the recording studio and record some more songs. Killing me softly, one of Colette’s favourite songs and this was one of the songs that was recorded during those sessions. Colette’s personal taste reflects her choice of recordings in recent times with Billie Holiday being her favourite artist, “As far as I am concerned Billie Holiday sings with so much soul, expression and a true voice”. Dianna Ross is also one of her favourite singers so Colette’s style without her knowing it is based loosely on these two great singers.

Colette who practices’s Reiki at Midleton Holistic Centre and also does Workshops around the country, loves music. Life is a journey and she loves the challenge of it and music is a big part of that for her, she wants to do more singing as a solo artist and goes to great lengths to learn songs so that she can at any given time stand up and sing. Colette’s songs will be on an album soon so keep an eye out for this emerging talent.
