Local Music News Bobby Lee

This week I spoke with local musician, Bobby Lee about the current activities in our local area. Bobby, who is very involved in running music classes for the younger people in our town at the Youth Cafe Hot Spot in Youghal among other things had a lot to try and get through in the short time we had on air.

The hot spot music group is a voluntary run club for 12 to 18 years and is based in Youghal. It has been in existence for the past 2 years. Every Thursday, the young and inspired can gather there to develop their musical skills through song writing, learning an instrument, jamming out in the hot spot music room kitted out by ‘IRMA’ (the Irish recorded music association) whom last year provided a bank of instruments for use by the club, or they can hang out in the youth cafe, nothing too serious but a whole lotta fun and freedom to learn. The club is facilitated by national youth organization Forage who provide a safe and warm environment for the group to happen

The first thing we discussed, after playing a track which Bobby brought with him into the studio, was the music from The Brownies in Ardmore. The Brownies recorded two songs for the Childrens Hospital in Crumlin some weeks ago. Under the guidance of Jane Maloney who has been active for almost 20 years with the Brownies and with the help of Bobby Lee and John Burke who produced the songs at Claycastle Studios the brownies got together to sing these songs. The two tracks "This little light of mine" and "Stand by me" will be in shops soon, so keep an eye out for that.

The second item on the agenda was the forth coming busking competition which will take place on the Saturday, during the weekend of the Queen of the Sea festival. This competition is for U19 and promises to be a great event again this year. Entry forms are available by contacting Bobby or the Youth Cafe in Youghal or go online at http://www.thesacredroots.com/ to download the application form there. There is an amazing prize for the winner cash and studio time at Claycastle Studios. The funds raised for this event go to a very worthy cause. It costs on average €130 per year to feed, educate and provide books, clothing etc for a child in Haiti, under the Organisation called Child of Haiti with the guidance of founders Joe and Patricia Carey. This organisation sponsor children from Kindergarten upwards. Currently there are 10 children who are being sponsored by Bobby and fundraising with the help of the Youth Cafe members.

We then moved on to the news that concerts are starting again in St Mary’s collegiate church with Declan O Rourke being the first guest to perform this year on Friday 27th July. Local singer Leo Mullane will be the opening act on the night. We hope to run a feature on Leo next week. Tickets for this event are available from Scotts shop 137 North Main Street Youghal and U 16’s are free on the night. Declan who has recently parted ways with his record company is really looking forward to coming to Youghal and performing at this great venue. Looking forward Luka Bloom is lined up for September and Caroline Fraher is going to join him on the night. In between talking about the above events, Bobby, who brought Leo into the studio with him, sang a few songs live on air. As always these wonderfully talented musicians’s had my full attention. Keep an eye out for Leo or Bobby who perform locally. Its well wroth a visit to see these guys play.
